Critical Look: Fender Squier Stratocaster Review

Almost everybody is familiar with the look of the Fender Squier Stratocaster and it has been played by some of the best guitarist in the world. In my travels around the world I have seen strat look-a-likes in China, the Philippines and in Africa. The problem is that for most beginners, a Fender Squier Stratocaster costs a bit more than they are willing to pay. Enter the Squier Fender Series. Back in Fender bought a US-based string maker named Squier. Fender had produced entry-level electric guitars before but had never modeled them after their popular line of Stratocasters and Telecasters. All of that changed in when Fender introduced the Fender Squier series of guitars.

Given their reputation, I’m thinking of possibly picking up one used – but how do I tell a CV from a regular Affinity, Bullet or some other Squier? Even if the seller is honest he may not have a good idea of what he’s got. Are there any tell-tale indications of a CV? The Classic Vibes all have the amber-tinted glossy necks. Vintage type tuners They usually come in specific colors. CV’s use the normal headstock for strats.

I’d try to avoid CY serialed Affinity strats as they are recognizably cheaper in build materials than some others. Probably a tele, although I may pick up a strat if I come across a good deal.

By Alfie , March 8, in Bass Guitars. Interesting to see how the colour of the red changes with the different guards. They could be further improved with some original machineheads but it will prove a difficult task in finding somethat fit because if you compare them to a real Fender ones these are smaller and and the holes don’t match and I am not about to butcher it by tapping holes and drilling other, they keep in tune but they are only a bit rough when you turn them, you don’t feel that quality feel of the original tuning pegs.

I can certainly live with that as it doesn’t affect the sound nor the look. It’s a cheap bass after all and changing too many bits would defeat the object. I would certainly swap out the machines for some vintage ones, they fit Aren’t they luvly! Maybe I was talking nonsense again. But who knows??? They’re just the standard reverse gotohs Not mine BTW.

Site Search. Summer was one of the most carefree times of my life. Even though I knew the likelihood was that it would be Japanese made, it just looked too expensive to be one of the regular models, and I hardly dared ask the price. Throughout the ’80s and early ’90s, I never saw a black one in the UK – either in person, during many, many shop visits, or listed in any dealer ad. I’m sure I’m right in saying that during the ’80s, the very large Birmingham dealer – Musical Exchanges – only ever stocked these Teles new in Candy Apple Red.

The Fender USA Teles had ceased to be available after the American Fullerton factory closed in , so from , Fender Japan had to fill that void whilst the new Fender Corona plant steadily set itself in motion over the next couple of years. The edgebound ’62 Custom Tele – one such premium quality guitar – was completely new in the Fender MIJ line in , and roughly took the place of the Squier JV Series ’52 reissue in the market.

Even though the ’62 Custom was a lot more expensive than, and obviously very different from the Squier ’52, the build standards and desirability were the same. During the revamp, the Squier Tele was downgraded to a cut-cost spec , and no longer had the status of the JV ’52 reissue. The ‘Custom’ element was purely cosmetic. On the Telecaster Custom, however, the body was unbound, and the traditional neck pickup was replaced with a humbucker.

I’ve never had any great interest in that model. Most obviously, the model was designated “Telecaster” on the headstock, and not “Custom Telecaster” as was the case with the originals.

Normally the difference between the standard Fender brands and the Squier brands of guitar are clear and plain, but in the 90s, a number of guitars were released by Fender that blurred this distinction. The Fender “Squier Series” of Stratocasters will not be familiar to many guitar fans, but in this piece, we’ll take a look at this unique series and what marks them out from the usual budget range of Squier guitars.

Following my recent experiences with a Fender Stratocaster that I bought at eBay, I thought I would put together this page to help other potential buyers spot if they are getting a standard or “Squier Series” Stratocaster. It turns out that the one I bought was not a standard Fender Stratocaster despite being sold to me as one. What I didn’t know, and nor did the seller was that this was in fact a “Squier Series” Stratocaster.

I’d not heard of these sort of guitars before so at first was a bit worried I’d bought a dud. Don’t get me wrong, it is a lovely guitar, but I uncovered a surprise when I took the neck off to make some adjustments. There in the neck pocket was a stamp that said Squier. I was initially horrified thinking I had a cheaper body stuck on the guitar neck, but turned to the internet to try to learn what was going on.

Before I’d played with this guitar I hadn’t suspected that it was anything other than a Fender Stratocaster. The body was a lot more solid and heavier than the Squier Stratocasters I had tried from the same era. It all felt right and sounded great. I couldn’t believe that this was actually a cheaper built Squier, it felt too good!

That stylish look is recreated here in authentically vintage detail. A split single-coil Precision Bass pickup gives this instrument punchy, seismic tone.
